News From the Ruff

Pine Ridge golf at Charwood Country Club is a true golfing pleasure.  If you are looking for an enjoyable, conveniently located golf course, this is the place!  Charwood offers a distinctive combination of challenge and beauty among the towering pines.  The tree lined fairways and beautiful lakes await your arrival at Charwood Country Club in Pine Ridge, South Carolina.  Best  of all, you don't have to drive miles to find peace and quiet.  Charwood is conveniently located at the intersection of two major interstates, I-77 and I-26.  With the airport only one exit down and the many hotels nearby, we will gladly come and pick you up so that you to can experience our affordable rates, convenient location, outstanding service, and challenging golf, only at Charwood Country Club.

The Dow Shall Rise and Your Golf Score Shall Lower...

As the news continues to be disconcerting on the economy, and the Dow continues to drop, we all need to be thinking of how to spend our money and the value it adds to our life.  Golf at Charwood Country Club is one of those great values for spending that entertainment dollar.  My argument is a simple one.  Where else can you spend seven to ten dollars an hour, be outside, and get the mental break from the every day concerns that we all need?  Enjoy the game you love with Charwood Country Club...

Networking Corporate Golf League

This 2009 golfing season, Charwood will be part of the Carolinas PGA Golf League Championship.  We will be hosting many league events throughout the year.  Among those you would like to form on your own, Charwood will have a Networking Corporate League and want you, your co-workers, and your friends to be part of it.  There is a one time fee of $39 / golfer which will cover the cook-out on the final night of play and help cover the expenses to send the winning team to compete in the Championship at Tobacco Road in Pinehurst.  The league will run 10 weeks.  The cost is $19 each week for 9 holes of golf and includes Happy Hour afterwards.  This is a great way to network with other businesses in our area.  For more information and to sign up, contact Jim Williams in the proshop at 803.755.2000 or by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

West Metro Corporate Golf League

This League is filling up fast!  Don't miss out...be sure to get your 2-person team signed up soon.  The After Hours Open House Kick-Off will be April 27th at 5 PM.  The West Metro League start date is May 4th 5:30 PM with a shotgun start at 5:45 PM.  Email Kelly for your registration form at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Let Jim help teach your child the game you so love...Golf !

One of the best things you can do as a Father, Mother, or Grandparent is to receive the benefits of teaching your son, daughter, grandson, or granddaughter the game you so love...golf.   Think of the many years you will have not only playing golf together, but watching them grow to love the game as much as you do...

Jim Williams, Charwood's PGA Head Golf Professional, has taught students ranging in age from 5 years old to seniors.  Private Lessons are available mornings and in the afternoon *on a space available basis.  A 1 hour lesson is $40 or 4 lessons for $140.  To schedule a lesson or for more information on private or group lessons, contact Jim directly on his cell 803.603.2794, at the club 803.755.2000,  or by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Play the Blue Course..By Evan Shultz

As most all of you know, Charwood has 27 holes of golf.  With this being said, each nine has to be played a little differently.  This is just my suggestion on "how to play the Blue  nine".

First, I believe this to be our best test of golf of the three nines.  Each nine has it's own elements, but the Blue nine possesses all of these elements.  My first thought while playing the Blue nine is not to go over the greens.  If you are over the greens, Par is a very tough option.  Secondly, the greens on the Blue nine have the most slope of the three.  Because of the slopes, a three putt becomes a regular problem.  Thirdly, I believe our Blue nine to be the best test for course management.  We have many holes where the course has high risk rewards.  There are two Par fives that can be reached in two, and a couple Par fours where we can cut the corners.  But as I mentioned, the risk may not be worth the rewards!  In closing, be sure to play short on pins, on approaches, and have your putting touch with you...

Notes from the Superintendent...Jack Miller

Spring is in the air and the azaleas are in bloom.  We have already begun trimming trees and edging cart paths.  The fairways and roughs have been arrified.  We will be roping off #3 on the Red to establish a healthier turf for Spring and Summer.  Please be patient while we increase the quality of the turf on this hole.  We need you to help take pride in the golf course.  Please remember to use sand bottles that are provided on the golf carts and sand buckets on all Par 3's  to fill your divots.  Thank you....

Notes from L.C.'s Grill Manager...Roy Rushing

Happy Hour is back!!!  Join everyone on the PATIO  next to L.C.'s Grille  for "Thirsty Thursday's" from 5:oo to 7:00 and enjoy your favorite beer at discount prices!

Golf Tip...Three Wood Chip

On this tip I want to talk about a shot where you are facing a real difficult situation from just off the edge of the green. You don’t have a very good lie and there is a difficult pin placement, the flag is tucked behind a ridge. Remember sometimes the easiest play is just the safest play, and the safest play in this situation would be a putter. Just roll the ball along the ground because your worst putt is never going to be as bad as your worst chip, so a putter is a good play. A variation of that is to use a three-wood. It is a shot that Tiger Woods has used a lot and many other people have been trying with quite a bit of success. You hit this shot just as if you were putting. Grip down on the club so that that your hands are all the way down to the shaft at the bottom of the grip; Stand close to the ball and upright with the club; and Hit the three-wood just as you would your putter. Now the three-wood has some loft on it so it will get the ball just on top of the first cut of grass and then the ball will roll over the green to the hole. It is a very safe play and can be very effective. So try the three-wood when you are just off the green, it will roll just like a putt and it is easier than a chip.

You had a Choice and You Chose Us...
Thank you!
