12th Annual LC Lucas Memorial Tournament
It's that time of year again when we put on the LC Lucas Charity Golf Tournament. I know when I sent this out last year, times were difficult for most and we thought we may be out of the woods by now, but it doesn't appear to be much better. That being said, I asked that if we all could give a little, we could help a lot. Last year was a huge success; we filled the tournament, had a great time and most importantly, people gave, donated, and families were blessed! We helped over 150 kids and families with Christmas, food on their table, clothes on their backs and heat in their homes. It is in times like these when it is difficult on many of us that we realize we still are blessed and fortunate to have what we have. There are so many families that are struggling each and every day of the year for whatever reasons. My father was a very disciplined man, but he was also a very kind and giving man to those in need and deserving. It is with those principles that the charity helps those that are helping themselves but just need a little extra help at certain times and do not depend on us to make it, but to help make it through a difficult time. It is because of friends like you that we are able to make a difference in the lives of these kids and families and that they might have what many take for granted. Please find the entry form and information sheet on our website at www.charwood.com under "Media" and then "News Archives". I ask that you find time to join us and play, that you can give a little by helping in sponsoring a hole, and that if you have a product or service you can donate (ANYTHING is welcome), please do so. We have amounts that we would like to have, but any amounts are welcome and will go a long way (reminder: 100% goes to the charity including ALL golf fees and there are $0 admin fees etc.). Thank you in advance and we look forward to seeing you on the range tee or at the bloody mary/cigar bar for a little "swing oil" prior to tee off. Thanks!
A Salute to Our Passing Members
Dear Friends,
I hope this finds all of you doing well. When you do what we do for a living, have the number of friends/customers we have and the amount of members, you are going to loose some during the year. Our customers range in age from 6 to 96. We don't really know the exact date we opened the doors but it was around 1974 for soft play and the name legally changed from the development to country club in 1978. The first rounds played were out a utility cart before the course was actually opened, walking the course with their clubs in the cart were my father LC Lucas, Harry Zafoot and his better half, and Kathy and Bill "Snooky" Myers (with me driving the cart). I give you this brief history to say, in the last few weeks, we lost a few very dear friends of the Charwood family. These people helped shape us to who we are today. Harry Zafoot was one of those family members that passed. There was an ongoing battle to who was the first member between Zafoot and Myers (Harry says Snooky was first but his dues came in late so Harry officially became the first member). Mr. Zafoot did anything and everything around the club. He retired early, but spent all his time smoking his pipe and cigars at the club. Two others that passed away where Charlie Bradshaw and Ford Whitman. Charlie worked at the club for many years when the "Ole Farmhouse" was "The Clubhouse". He put in many long hours and held the fort down while my father and I followed Carolina football. It's the only time the fort was left alone and we knew it was in good hands. Ford was also a dear friend of LC and played golf every weekday with "the group" and cooked breakfast along side LC each Saturday and Sunday morning. There is also rumor that part of the development name "Rockford Place" bears his namesake….. I guess as the club gets older, we will be losing many more of our faithful founding members and regulars who helped steer us to where we are today. These were and still are a very important part of our operation. I constantly comment on how these and others like them constantly strive to make Charwood better, how they treated guest like they have know them all their lives, how they ALWAYS left things better than they found them and always did anything they could to make Charwood and those around them lives better…. Rock Lucas
Maintenance Corner
Maintenance corner: I would like to say a special thank you to Jack Miller for his many years of service to Charwood CC….Jack had an opportunity to be a co-owner of a golf club in Rockingham NC and it was an opportunity he couldn't let pass by. Jack did a wonderful job while at Charwood and we wish him the best of luck in his new adventure. Speaking of Millers, Jack's brother Don is still with us along with our very qualified and dependable maintenance staff. For the interim, Don has taken charge of the day-to-day maintenance operation. With Don's year of experience and Rock having his class A Superintendent card, they can pretty much keep things going smooth and like all else, if we get lost, we'll pull over and ask for directions…. Well, it's that time of year again, once everything gets just about right on the golf course, it's time for the leaves to change, fall off the trees, and do their part in making a bit of a mess of everything! Last year we over-seeded the white and blue courses. This year, we will be over-seeding again, but on the blue and red courses. The grass we have on the tees, fairways and greens are Bermuda, which goes dormant (brown) in the winter and comes back in the spring/summer. Over-seeding is a choice courses make each year and many factors go into the decision making process. We will over-seed the tees and fairways with winter perennial ryegrass and the greens with Poa Trivialis (a bent like grass seed). The white course has the new mini verde hybrid Bermuda grass that does not like to be over-seeded. Like the decision to over-seed, there is also a decision as to paint or not paint the new ultra hybrid greens. We will be painting the white greens probably two-three times over the winter just to give it a hint of color as they will green up on their own with just a few short days of warm weather. We will not be over-seeding any areas of the white course and use this time to spray out all foreign grasses. As of now (we reserve the right to change our plan ;0), we plan to address the following items over the fall/winter: existing bunkers, cart paths, new bunkers, pruning limbs, and removing certain trees around the course. If you have any suggestions or ideas, please do not hesitate to send them to us…
Congratulations to Don Miller ~
~October "Staff Member of the Month"
This month, the honors go to Don Miller as Staff Member of the Month. His peers voted for him hands down saying "what a wonderful job he has done on the golf course". Don comes in before the sun comes up to make sure your golfing experience that day is an enjoyable one while on the course. Don, who received the honors at our staff cookout, went on to say that he had to give credit to the help of his maintenance staff who works alongside of him. Thanks Don for a great job!

And Last But Not Least, a Note from Rock
As you know and are perhaps experiencing with the rest of the country, these economic times are very difficult. With the cost of doing business going up and up and having to keep our prices at check (some are still the same prices as in the 90's!), times in the golf business are difficult also. I say this to say "thank you!". First, thank you for continuing to play GOLF and second for choosing to play with us at Charwood. With each dollar you spend being scrutinized and your dollars being disposable income with choices of restaurants, movies, ball games and heaven forbid, another golf course, we thank you. Our staff has worked very hard to earn every dollar that comes in by keeping the golf course in great condition, watching every expense item and knowing that we work for you. Many may not know this, but 2007 was the first year in history that more golf courses closed than opened. This year, it is rumored that somewhere between 1,000 and 1,800 courses will close. We understand this each and every day we come to work and strive not to become one of these statistics. This year has been a pretty good year thus far and with good weather, good friends like you, a little luck and the good Lords blessings, we will manage to not only make it through another year, but also be better off than the year before.
Thanks to YOU... and thanks to our STAFF!
You had a Choice and You Chose Us...
Thank you!
